With the goal of continuing to provide the highest quality care in Clark and Champaign counties, Mercy Health has become the first in the area to introduce the advanced scanning capabilities of GE Healthcare’s Revolution CT. It provides faster and more efficient scanning while delivering the lowest possible dose of radiation.
Computed tomography (CT) is one of the most important diagnostic tools for health care providers. With a serious injury or illness, CT is likely to be the first imaging exam a patient may encounter when they are suspected of having serious disease or injury. Utilized in the emergency department and general inpatient and outpatient environments, it is also used in guiding less invasive interventional procedures, such as biopsies and ablations.
GE Healthcare’s Revolution CT, which is now available at Mercy Health – Springfield Regional Medical Center, expands the health system’s capabilities by providing high-definition imaging across the entire body. This will help physicians make a confident diagnosis across all applications. They can now perform cardiac exams with a single heartbeat, whole-brain imaging in less than a second and detailed bone imaging even for patients with metal implants.
It also comes equipped with low dose technology, making it safer for patients. The machine routinely reduces the radiation dose up to 82 percent with the same image quality as a conventional machine. There are other improvements that can also help reduce patient anxiety:
- The scanner is 50 percent quieter than previous generation CTs.
- Revolution CT provides soft ambient lighting and personalized gantry displays.
- It can comfortably accommodate more patients with a larger 80 centimeter bore size and higher table weight limit.
“We are excited to offer the only 128-slice CT scanner in Clark and Champaign counties to better serve our community. By acquiring this advanced technology to support our Springfield Regional Medical Center campus we can provide advanced CT imagery with a reduction of dose and procedure time for the communities we serve,” said Darren Daigle, executive directive of business support.
The wide coverage of this CT scanner allows health care providers to scan entire organs such as the brain, heart, liver and pancreas in a single, 0.28 second rotation. That’s a big benefit to patients who will no longer have to hold their breath as long for accurate scans. Also, the speed of this new technology allows providers to gather information about function as well as anatomy, enabling a comprehensive stroke assessment of the brain in a single exam.
