Mercy Health – Anderson Hospital

Anderson Hospital has 286 acute care beds, with 36 emergency department beds, 20 ICU beds, 30 obstetric beds and is classified as a Level 2 NICU. The hospital offers a broad range of inpatient and outpatient services. It was awarded as a Truven Top 100 Hospital on 12 occasions and has been recognized for its excellence in stroke treatment by the AHA/ASA.

We specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases, such as arthritis, lupus and gout. In addition to our wide range of treatments, we focus on lifestyle modifications for long-term health and quality of care. We offer lab services, joint injections, subcutaneous injections and infusion services on-site.

Block Schedule

Our rotational experiences have been developed to maximize education opportunities while allowing our residents to thrive personally. Our residents will integrate into educational teams and will be scheduled to minimize in-house, overnight call allowing personal wellness and resilience while maximizing educational experiences. The academic schedule consists of 13 four-week blocks.

Resident Didactics

Resident Conferences

Scheduled from 12 to 1 p.m. Topics will include a broad range of structured didactic lectures, given by faculty members. Residents will have protected time to attend. In addition, we have daily didactics session on morning conferences and in addition: comprehensive daily bedside teaching. 

POCUS Training 

Residents will have structured training (both didactics and bedside training) in performing Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS). Our goal is to certify all the residents to be able to perform basic POCUS including: cardiac, lung, renal, fluid assessment, venous system and more. 

Grand Rounds

Topics will include a broad range of internal medicine topics that are important for evidence-based practice. 

Core Content of Internal Medicine

This series will include the reviews and workshops covering the core content topics in internal medicine including, but not limited to: Quality Improvement, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Pulmonology, Hematology – Oncology, Nephrology, Infectious Disease, Rheumatology, Endocrinology and Neurology/Geriatrics. 

Morbidity and Mortality

Residents will present Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) didactic session monthly. This is an opportunity for a critical appraisal of services offered, implementations that could improve quality of care provided and mitigation any patient safety concerns. 

Journal Club

Journal Club will be held monthly. Articles will be pre-approved by the program director. Residents will gain knowledge at locating, appraising and assimilating evidence from scientific studies related to their patients’ health problems. 

Board Review Series

The Board Review Series is an interactive, weekly session led by faculty members using recent MKSAP questions, updated guidelines and research to prepare for the ABIM Certification Exams.

Weekly Training in Emergency Medicine

ACLS training, managing life threatening arrythmia and more. 

GME/Institution

Topics will be presented by GME and/or the institution and include: Resident forum with DIO, Administrative Hospital Related topics/initiatives and quality metrics, Wellness (Financial, mental and other), Social Determinants of Health, DEI and other topics as determined by GME or the institution.

Research and Scholarly Activity 

Residents are expected to complete one research project and one quality improvement project before graduation. Residents will be offered opportunities to participate in scholarly activities and have opportunities to participate in quality improvement projects. Residents will be educated in research study design and basic statistics as part of our evidence-based medicine curriculum.
