Program Overview
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Mercy Health — West Hospital supports two residents each year as they build the clinical knowledge, confidence, and independence needed for the next step in their pharmacy careers. Through diverse patient care experiences, individualized mentorship, and progressive responsibility, residents are prepared to pursue clinical pharmacist positions, board certification, or PGY2 residency training.
Residents gain experience across a broad range of pharmacy practice areas. Required rotations include Orientation, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, Antimicrobial Stewardship, Ambulatory Care, and Administration. Longitudinal learning experiences include Anticoagulation Clinic, Drug Information, Medication Safety, Pharmacy Practice, and Research.
Residents can tailor portions of the program to their professional interests through elective experiences in Anesthesia/Surgery and Cardiology or by completing an advanced experience in a core practice area. Additional electives may also be developed based on resident interest and preceptor availability.
Residents have the opportunity to complete a Teaching Certificate through the University of Cincinnati and gain experience precepting APPE students during advanced learning experiences. Together, these experiences help each resident grow as a clinician, educator, and confident member of the healthcare team.
