Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center

St. Vincent is home to five Life Flight air ambulances, holds the highest designation for treating high risk mothers and babies, Comprehensive Stroke Center and is a Level I Trauma Center for children and adults.

Located on the St. Vincent campus are: Orthopedics, Mercy Health Regional Heart and Vascular Institute, Mercy Health Neuroscience Institute and the area’s only Mobile Stroke Unit. Mercy Health – St. Charles Hospital

St. Charles has been providing for the health care needs of Toledo’s eastern communities. A 390-bed Level III Trauma Center, St. Charles serves residents of Oregon, East Toledo and Lucas, Wood and Ottawa counties.

St. Charles provides a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient care and offers a homelike maternity center, a comprehensive cancer center, acute inpatient rehabilitation services and a women’s health center.

Nationwide Children's Hospital

Based on models of state-of-the-art facilities around the country, Nationwide Children’s Hospital has the full range of sophisticated facilities demanded by advanced pediatric care including:

A 16-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit with long-term seizure monitoring
A 30-bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with a perinatal center. Level III is the highest designation awarded by the Ohio Department of Health to hospitals that provide care for high-risk newborns.
A 26-bed general pediatric unit

Didactic Curriculum

The core of the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program is the approach to didactic and early surgical exposure. Didactics are accomplished with daily morning lectures. This daily approach to didactics has resulted in a 100 percent first-time board passage rate and performance on the annual Orthopedic In-Training Examination (OITE) of 97th and 100th percentile the last two years (including a historic percentage above the 90th percentile on average).

The PGY 1 year provides six months in the orthopedic services and rotations in plastic surgery, musculoskeletal radiology (MRI), trauma (general) surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, ICU medicine and vascular surgery.

Clinical services in the PGY 2-5 years of training include strong exposure to adult reconstruction, Level I trauma, foot and ankle, hand and upper extremity, shoulder and elbow, pediatric orthopedics, orthopedic oncology, spine, sports medicine and general orthopedics.

Additionally, an emphasis on early surgical exposure/operative experience is a hallmark of this program. Residents should expect hands-on supervised surgical exposure from day one of residency training, with rapid progression of autonomy based on skill level. Residents typically graduate with between 2,000 and 3,000 surgical cases that they have logged as completed.
