Meet the Director and Team — Pharmacy Residency at St. Vincent Medical Center

Welcome from the Program Director

Thank you for your interest in the PGY 1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center (MHSVMC). This institution was part of a multi-site residency program for many years before expanding into multiple PGY 1 programs in 2016. Our site has a long history as the critical care regional referral and teaching center within the Bon Secours Mercy Health system, a faith-based system spanning seven states. Advantages of working in a larger hospital system include opportunities for a wide variety of rotations with electives at other sites and a chance to participate in system-wide drug policy development. 

The Pharmacy Department at MHSVMC serves diverse patient populations as a Level I Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center, with a children’s hospital onsite and two outpatient infusion centers. In addition to the PGY1 program, we also offer PGY2 pharmacy residency programs in critical care and ambulatory care. Preceptors are actively engaged in helping each resident meet their full potential based on their areas of interest. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based medicine, leadership and patient safety.

Other unique program aspects include a teaching certificate program in collaboration with the University of Findlay College of Pharmacy and certification in advanced cardiac life support. Deidre Burger, PharmD, MBA, BCPS | Program Director

Pharmacy School: University of Toledo, 2008
Residency: Henry Ford Hospital

Dr. Burger has worked for Mercy Health for more than 15 years in a variety of roles, starting as a pharmacy intern and eventually moving into her current role as clinical pharmacy manager and PGY 1 residency program director for Mercy Health – St. Vincent Medical Center and Mercy Health – Children’s Hospital. Dr. Rohaley earned a teaching certificate from Wayne State University during her residency and more recently earned a Master of Business Administration in Health Care Management degree from the University of Findlay in 2017.

Dr. Burger primarily precepts pharmacy students and residents on internal medicine and infectious disease rotations, as well as drug information and research projects. She is passionate about teaching those new to the profession, as well as staff development and growth for all team members. Additionally, she enjoys participating in pharmacy organizations and was president of the Toledo area Society of Health System Pharmacists from 2014 to 2016.
